Civil Engineering is essential, transforming and improving our everyday experience of the world. Construction contributes almost £90bn to the UK economy, and is therefore recognised as a priority by the UK government. The November 2022 budget announced further investment in major Construction and Engineering projects delivering:

  • HS2 to Manchester.
  • Core Northern Powerhouse rail links outlined in the Integrated Rail Plan.
  • East West Rail.
  • Broadband rollout through Project Gigabit, with plans to reach at least 85% gigabit-capable broadband coverage by 2025 and nationwide coverage by 2030.

CITB forecasts predict that construction needs another 250,000 workers by 2026, meaning there is no better time to pursue a career in Civil Engineering and capitalise on the monumental potential and opportunity brought by the industry's prosperity.

CITB's projections for 2023-2027 show Architects, Civil Engineers and Plant Operators all exceeding a 1% growth, demonstrating higher demand for skilled, technical, and professional occupations.

Five regions of prominent growth – all exceeding annual average growth rates between 2023 and 2027 – include:

  • Greater London (accounting for a fifth of the UK’s total construction output)
  • East of England
  • East Midlands
  • South East
  • Yorkshire and the Humber (joint highest AAG rate of 2.2% with East of England)
